If she comes off as a girl Antoine Doinel, it’s since the original tale was cowritten by Francois Truffuut, who was allegedly preparing to film this at the time of his demise. Cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Didier Bezace, Simon de la Brosse, Nathalie Cardone, and Raoul Billerey. (104 minutes, 1989)

After the Rehearsal: Fuller returned to filmmaking after a long hiatus with this lucid, autobiographical account of a particular infantly battalion and its courageous sergeant throughout WW2. Difficult to trust one film might bundle so much into its narrative, an opulent, moving, practical, and poetic film. Carradine depicts and plays Fuller’s doppelganger, complete with cigar. Cast includes Erland Josephson, Ingrid Thulin, Lena Olin, Nadja PaJrnstjema-Weiss, and Bertil Guve. (112 minutes, 1984)

Brilliant, often spellbinding film reflects on the consequence of American pop lifestyle on postwar Europeans. Cast includes Rudiger Vogler, Yella Rottlander, Lisa Kreuzer, and Chuck Berry. The Big Road: This movie is about a shy busboy who commits himself to a selfish nightclub singer. The film is abnormal (and oddly watchable), with extremely unorthodox roles for both Fonda and Ball. Cast includes Henry Fonda, Lucille Ball, Barton Mafamilye, Eugene Pallette, Agnes Moorehead, Sam Levene, Ray Collins, Hans Conried, and Ozzie Nelson. (88 minutes, 1942)

Sawdust and Tinsel: Kindles soar in this gorgeous, metaphorical film set in a small-time carnival and concentrating on the relation between carnival owner Gronberg and his oversexed mistress (Andersson). Cast includes Harriet Andersson, Ake Gronberg, Anders Ek, Gudrun Brost, Hasse Ekman, and Annika Tretow. (92 minutes, 1953)

Rhapsody: 3 way romance amid opulent Taylor, violinist Gassman, and pianist Ericson. Cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Vittorio Gassman, John Ericson, Louis Calhern, and Michael Chekhov. (115 minutes, 1954)

Stairway to Heaven: Powell and Pressburger manage to straddle actuality and fantasy in a most disarming approach in this irregular tale of a guide in WW2 who claims he was unintentionally selected to die, and should now plead for his life in a Heavenly court. Cast includes David Niven, Kim Hunter, Raymond Massey, Roger Livesey, Robert Coote, Marius Goring, and Richard Attenborough. (104 minutes, 1946)
